Taxonomy
Asteraceae (sunflower family)
Listed as Bolophyta ligulata (Jones) W.A. Weber in Weber and Wittmann (2012).
Ranks and Status
State Rank : S1S2
State Rank Reason : Parthenium ligulatum has a limited distribution in northwest Colorado, USA. It is known from 11 occurrences in 2 counties. Threats include habitat loss from oil and gas development, incompatible livestock grazing, competition from non-native plants and motorized recreation. Long-term drought throughout the species range is also a concern; Parthenium ligulatum is expected to be extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
U.S. Endangered Species Act : none
Colorado Threatened and Endangered List : none
Other Statuses : BLM, SWAP Tier 2
Description and Phenology
General Description:
Perennials, 1-2 cm (underground caudices 2-5+ cm, branched; plants cespitose or forming mats). Leaf blades oblanceolate to spatulate, 5-18+ Ã 1-2(-4+) mm, margins entire, faces strigilloso-sericeous (gray) and obscurely gland-dotted. Heads radiate, borne singly. Peduncles 0-4 mm. Phyllaries: outer 5 -± ovate, 2.5-3 mm, inner 5 -± orbiculate, 3-4+ mm. Pistillate florets 5; corolla laminae oval to elliptic, 1-2 mm, retuse. Disc florets 15-25+. Cypselae oblanceoloid to pyriform, 3.5-4 mm; pappus-like enations 2, erect to spreading, -± subulate, 0.5-1 mm (a third, -± subulate element sometimes at apex of adaxial face), (Flora of North America 1993+).
Look Alikes:
Not likely to be confused with other species in the same habitat (Spackman et al. 1997).
Phenology:
Flowers early to late May; fruiting late May to early June.

Threats and Management Issues
Observations from the element occurrence records indicate this species may be threatened by oil and gas development, incompatible livestock grazing, competition from non-native plants and motorized recreation. Livestock grazing and other agricultural development has been documented at nearly 60% of the occurrences. Forty-five percent of occurrences report motorized recreation within the species habitat, and oil and gas development has been noted at 27%. Competition from non-native invasive plants has been documented at 45% of the occurrences. Other low level threats include fragmentation of habitat by roads and hydrologic alterations. Long-term drought throughout the species' range is also a concern. This species is considered to have low adaptive capacity and is expected to be extremely vulnerable to climate change under both RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, as assessed for the 2025 Colorado State Wildlife Action Plan (CNHP 2025).
