This member of the pea family grows on highly seleniferous (containing the element selenium) soils derived from Niobrara Shale in Grand County. It is a narrowly endemic species estimated to occupy about 800 acres in north central Colorado.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7137\" src=\"https:\/\/cnhp.colostate.edu\/cnhpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Astost-habitat.jpg\" width=\"278\" height=\"320\" alt=\"Astragalus osterhoutii habitat\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cnhp.colostate.edu\/cnhpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Astost-habitat.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cnhp.colostate.edu\/cnhpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Astost-habitat-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:78%\">A. osterhoutii<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%\"> in its native habitat &#8211; sagebrush shrublands<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left\">A few dozen species of <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Astragalus<\/span>, including <span style=\"font-style: italic\">A. osterhoutii<\/span>, have been identified as \u201cselenium indicators\u201d, accumulating the element in their tissues as they grow on seleniferous soils. In the early decades of the 20th century, selenium was identified as the underlying cause of \u201calkali disease\u201d which affected livestock that were fed grains or grasses grown on certain soils.
