\nA visit to
\nWashington DC is always interesting and inspiring, and my trip this month was
\nno exception!  <\/span>There were several reasons
\nto go this time.<\/span>  <\/span>I gave two
\npresentations on CNHP\u2019s projects at the Transportation Research Board<\/a>\u2019s (TRB) annual
\nMeeting.<\/span>  <\/span>One was on our wildlife escape
\nramp study, led by Jeremy Siemers, and funded by CDOT.<\/span>  <\/span>The other was on our pilot test of the
\nIntegrated Ecological Framework, a project funded by TRB.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\nThis conference
\ncoincided with the Disasters and Environment Conference<\/a>, held by the National Council for Science and the Environment<\/a>.  <\/span>CSU is
\na sponsoring institution of this conference and our Dean, Joyce Berry, and our
\nProvost Rick Miranda were there.<\/span>  <\/span> <\/span>There were presentations by many inspiring
\nenvironmental leaders (the outgoing director of NOAA, Jane Lubchenco, gave a memorable presentation). <\/span><\/div>\n

\nAnd of
\ncourse, I also spent a day visiting our friends at NatureServe<\/a>\u2019s headquarters
\nin Arlington, Virginia.<\/span>  <\/span>With Leslie
\nHoney, Vice President of Conservation Services for NatureServe, I met with Dan
\nFenn, a staffer in Senator Mark Udall\u2019s Office.<\/span> 
\n<\/span>We showed him the State of Colorado\u2019s Biodiversity 2011 and gave him a
\ncopy of CNHP\u2019s High Park Fire poster, and it was a wonderful
\nopportunity to highlight some of the ways that we can help identify no-regrets
\nconservation solutions.<\/span>  <\/span>Leslie and I
\nmade a great team and I hope we can visit our congressional representatives
\nagain before long!<\/span>  <\/span>It was fun to visit
\nour friends at NatureServe- thank you to everyone (Pat, Leslie, Lori, Don,
\nRob, Kat, and Bruce) for your hospitality.<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

\nTwo of our
\nfriends from Oregon, Jimmy Kagan (Director of the Oregon Biodiversity
\nInformation Center (ORBIC), CNHP\u2019s analog in that state) and Lisa Gaines
\n(Director of the Oregon Institute for Natural Resources), spent the week there
\nas well and we did a pretty good job of trying some of Washington\u2019s fabulous
\nculinary offerings together while figuring out how to conserve the world’s biodiversity.  Jimmy and I visited the wonderful United
\nStates Botanic Garden between meetings on the last day of my stay.  One of my favorite things there, aside from
\nthe beautiful orchid collection, was getting to see the Wollemi pine.  I had read about the discovery of this
\nancient tree species in the Blue Mountains of Australia 10 years ago, and it
\nwas wonderful to meet this species in person!  <\/span><\/div>\n

\nOn the last
\nevening of my stay I walked down Pennsylvania Avenue back to my hotel (after
\nstopping for a beer near the Whitehouse, where I met the City Manager of the
\nCity of Auburn, WA and a former hedge fund manager for Louis Bacon – both classic
\nWashington DC experiences), and followed the parade route for Obama\u2019s
\nInauguration.  <\/span><\/div>\n

\nin Washington DC with our national leaders.
